How to pick the best ottoman size & height

[ez-toc]

An ottoman is a terrific addition to any living room, and it’s particularly popular right now in living room decor. If you’ve heard the term ottoman a few times, you might have decided that you need one in your home.

What size should you get, though? We’ve done the legwork to make sure you’re well-informed on this highly popular piece of furniture before you buy it.

The ideal height and size for an ottoman is determined by how you want to utilise it. You might just need a small, low rectangular ottoman with just enough room for your feet to rest.

You might be searching for something with more storage space or that you can use as a coffee table.

When deciding on the ideal ottoman height and size, you should also consider the size of the other furniture in the space.

Let’s take a look at a few of them.

What is the best height for an Ottoman

First, you need to make sure that you are thinking about the height of your ottoman. This is going to be important if you want to guarantee that your ottoman is providing the max level of comfort possible.

An ottoman that’s height is either too high or too low for size of your sofa, can be very uncomfortable, generally this cause your back and legs to hurt after awhile.

To ensure that your ottoman is the perfect height, you need to make sure that it’s a few inches lower than the seat height for a chair or sofa in your home.

However, you do still need to take into account the furniture that you will be using it with. Some people prefer lower furniture options and if that’s the case, then you need to make sure that you are finding an ottoman to match.

Ottoman height vs sofa seat height

The first ting you need to do is measure your sofa seat height. To work this out, simply measure from the ground to the top of the seat cushion.

A standard sofa seat height can range from away between 16 to 18 inches. Once you have this measurement, determine if you’re going to use if for a footrest or as a center piece of furniture for example a footstool coffee table.

If you have a low sofa, a tall ottoman will look out of place and throw off the balance of the space. Most people will find that an ottoman with a height ranging from 13 to 18 inches would suffice.

Even so, if this is a better fit for your needs, you can always go 2 inches lower.

Our advice would be to make sure that it is slightly shorter than or the same height as your sofa, but never any taller.

Top Tip

Use a box or something similar to rest your feet on, see if it’s comfortable, and then measure the height of the box to get the perfect match.

Can a ottoman be the same height as a sofa

A ottoman doesn’t have to be the same height as the sofa seat, but there shouldn’t be a discrepancy of more than 2-3 inches either way. Unless it’ll be used as a footrest, in which case it should be around 1 inch shorter than the seat height.

If you wish to utilise the ottoman for a specific purpose, you can use some general rules of thumb to determine the optimal height.

  • Footrest: 13″ – 18″
  • Extra Seating: 15″ – 18″
  • Coffee Table: 16″ – 18″
  • Storage: 16″ – 20″

How do I know what size Ottoman to buy

Because our ottomans come in a variety of sizes and shapes, the size that is best for you is determined by its use, the size of your space, the size of your sofa or chair, and the furniture it will be positioned next to.

The other pieces of furniture in the room also play a part because the room must appear proportional and balanced.

Our ottomans come in 7 different sizes to suit pretty much every size of a sofa.

Remember the size of ottoman you choose for your living room will be dependent on the size of your room and size of your sofa.

Use the following guide to determine the optimal ottoman size to best pair with your sofa:

2 seater sofas under 60″

For a footrest – our smaller square ottoman which measure 24”, this size is typically the width of the seat cushion and would be perfect for a chaise-style alternative. This size is meant for one person, doesn’t take up lots of space and is the ideal add-on to your sofa.

For a coffee table alternative – or for a center piece footstool in the middle of your room our medium size which measures 35” x 28”, this would be the ideal size the keep in proportion while still been a generous size.

3 seater sofas larger than 83″

For large sofas you really need to go bigger in size, our grand size which measures 45” x 35” is the perfect match. Big enough to use as a footrest, easily enough space for 2 people to use. Lots of space to style a tray while still having usable space as well.

When going this big in size a lot of space is taken up in the room – you really should be think about having additional storage.

Corner sofas

For modular corner style sofas, we recommend going with a square footstool – 30” x 30” or even our biggest size 36” x 36” depending on how many seats you have, any smaller they will start to look lost.

For even more versatility, we recommend pairing two square ottomans within your room to accommodate larger corner sofa layouts.

For a coffee table alternative – our grand size which measures 45” x 35” with storage or even two round ottomans.
